Vladimir Sheshak is a conceptual artist and curator based in Tbilisi, Georgia. Born in Crimea and artistically formed in Moscow, he has been actively working in Georgia for more than three years, between Tbilisi and Kutaisi.

His practice explores the relationship between perception, memory, presence and the changing nature of experience in a digital environment. Working across different media, Sheshak develops concept-driven projects in which the form emerges from the idea rather than preceding it.

Alongside his artistic practice, he works as an independent curator and researches Georgian art, from its classical heritage to contemporary practices.

Prior to relocating, he spent several years working in Moscow as part of the Baseless art collective. Together with the group’s artists and co-curator Anastasiya Gross, this period culminated in their farewell project, Baseless Love.

Artist statment

What cannot be said in words looks for another way to speak.

Sometimes it begins with a feeling that has not yet become a thought. Then an idea appears, followed by the need to find its form. Not the other way around. The medium is chosen only when it becomes clear what needs to happen.

An object, an image, an action, a digital gesture. Each time, a different way of approaching what resists a direct gaze: memory, presence, time, the body, personal history, the traces of life within a digital environment.

A work does not remain what it was when it was made. Once outside the artist, it enters a life of its own. Material resists, space changes it, another person's gaze adds something that was not there before. At some point, it becomes impossible to separate what was intended from what emerged on its own.

Perhaps that is the moment that interests me most.
